Rothenburg ob der Tauber Two Rothenburgs??
Posted: Fri February 16, 2007 09:35 PM UTC
Hello,
My daughter is travelling to Germany on a school exchange & "Rothenburg" is on the itinerary. I'm a bit confused because on my map of Germany there's another "Rothenburg" which is east of Dresden. It looks very small. Is it also a tourist attraction? Is "Rothenburg of der Tauber" often referred to as just "Rothenburg."
signed,
Confused

"Rothenburg OB der Tauber" is the official name, but most people will say Rothenburg.
There are diff. places with that name, BUT the most beautiful is the one above !

Oh she will enjoy it there. We went there as well when I studied in Germany.
Look at this website to learn all about it:
http://www.spotlightgermany.com/articles/rothenburg.htm
It is not the one that you are thinking of:
Located about 70 miles east of Heidelberg, this Bavarian town's full name is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, meaning "Red Castle on the Tauber River."

There are even more (but even smaller) places that these two with this name.

Mostlikely it's "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" (or "Rothenburg o.d.T.") as this is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Germany.
11.314 inhabitants
http://www.rothenburg.de

Rothenburg/Oberlausitz (or Rothenburg/O.L.)
5.834 inhabitants

Not a big tourist attraction, but also no must-avoid.

Generally any addition to the name may point to the fact that there is more than one place with this name. Most famous:
Frankfurt am Main (mostly referred just as "Frankfurt")
659.928 inhabitants
Frankfurt (Oder)
63.748 inhabitants

There was a poster during the Football Worldcup last year who was so happy about finding a cheap hotel in "Frankfurt". Until he asked at a forum how far it was to the stadium. Over 600 km was slightly more than he expected.

"Ob der Tauber" it means Above the river Tauber, that flows in a small valley next to the townwalls, that are built about 30 meters above that river.
ob stands for "oberhalb"

Thanks for the quick answers. I'm quite certain the tour will stopping in "Rothenburg ob der Tauber." I've also noticed there are 2 towns/cities named "Weimar." I'm assuming that Buchenwald is near the eastern most "Weimar." ???
