Maastricht Book stores in Maastricht that might have Europe Travel guide books in English?
Posted: Thu February 15, 2007 07:06 PM UTC
BACKGROUND: My daughter has just arrived in Maastricht (from USA)--she will be there for 4 months studying at the University. She took 1 Europe travel guide book with her before she left home; however, she would like one or two more. A good travel book in USA costs $22.00 (30 Eur) Also, for me to send the book to my daughter (n Maastricht), it will cost approximately $26.00 (35 Eur). Furthermore, it will take 2 to 3 weeks to get the book to her. QUESTION: Is there a big book store in Maastricht that I could contact (or she could visit)that might have Europe travel guide books (in ENGLISH)? It would be great if this Maastricht book store had a website that I could visit---perhaps I could see their book inventory online---and perhaps I could purchase a book for my daughter online or, perhaps I could phone to book store (this process would certainly be less costly and faster than me attempting to send my daughter a book). If there is not such a book store in Maastricht---is there one in a nearby city (in the Netherlands)? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, ---Jaes.

The largest bookshop in Maastricht stocking English books - which if your daughter is at the university she should certainly know by now, as it replaces the former Academic Bookstore - is Selexyz Dominicanen, but not surprisingly its website is in DUTCH!! http://www.selexyz.nl/pages/content/S2/selexyzwinkel_dominikanerkerk.aspx
If you can identify what you want from U.S. sources, you could e-mail them in English and ask if they have the title in question and how much it would cost, but unless you and they are prepared to consider giving/taking credit card details by phone, you would have to send your daughter the money and get her to go in and get the books.
Otherwise, you can of course order anything in print in English from www.amazon.co.uk, and for delivery to the Netherlands, being within the EU, there will then be nothing more to pay on arrival. I would have thought this would be a cheaper option than posting books from the U.S. If you don't understand the prices in GBP you can use www.xe.com to check conversion to USD.

The aforementioned bookstore (selexyz) definitely has English-language travelbooks. I've worked at one of the other selexyz bookstores, they are the largest (general and academic) in the country.
Your question in English will be no problem if you e-mail them.

What you can also do is note the 10-digit ISBN of any guide that you find on the net, and then e-mail them to sort out the ordering and paying details so that your daughter can pick it up there.

If necessary, I can find out who's the specialist on travelbooks for you at that particular bookstore to get you a direct e-mail address.

Good luck!

PS Your daughter is very lucky. Maastricht is one of the most lovely Dutch cities :-)

"gaminari," thank you so very much for taking the time to respond. Your information is exactly what I needed. Ordering out of the UK is an excellent option that I will certainly investigate. Again, thanks. ---Jaes.

Let me know what you want. I will phone one of my ex-colleagues. It will save you postage if the book can be picked up at a local bookstore!
