| Ushuaia | weather and clothes Posted: Thu February 15, 2007 02:41 AM UTC We are flying from BA to Ushuaia on February 28,2007. We plan to be in Ushuaia for 3 nights, 2 nights each in Puerto arenas and puerto Natales and 2 nighta in El Calafate. We are in the process of making reservations at B & B. Our question is (1) what will the weather be (2) what kind of clothes and shoes should we bring. We are around 60, are not campers or into trekking. However, we like walks and natural sight seeing without climbing hills. Please recommend sightseeing and self or other tours. Thanks. |

Sightseeings;
Punta Arenas: the penguin colony of Seno Otway / Fuerte Bulnes. We did both sites on one day with a rental car. Pt Natales: assuming you will travel to Pt Natales by bus, you could stroll along the city the first afternoon. The second day I would highly recommend to visit Torres del Paine National Park, either by guided tour or by rental car (as we did one day). The scenery is really fantastic and we do regret not having stayed in the park (although very expensive). El Calafate: the same in the afternoon the town of El Calafate; next day a guided tour to the glacier of Perito Moreno - the 'must see' sight (80 km's from town). For more info and pictures please take a look at my pages about these destinations. feel free to ask more information. Happy travels Jaap

I too have some tips on my pages that may be helpful to you.
Ushuaia's average winter temp is 1C, while its summer average is 9C, so it is rather moderate in temperature, but has the possibility for extreme swings. El Calafate's climate can be much colder. Hiking boots for wet/muddy grounds are advised. Waterproof jackets are too. In Ushuaia, since you are not much into hiking hills, you can see some nice panoramas of the town and mountains by taking a chair lift up to Glacier Martial. Without exerting yourself, the Tren del fin del Mundo and the Beagle Channel cruises (with or without additional excursions) are interesting. From El Calafate, you can take a bus to Glacier Perito Moreno and walk the observation paths yourself. Also, you can take a boat trip up some of the lakes and visit floating glaciers such as Upsala.
