Hi
Im trying to wotk out how much spending money my husband & I will need for 2 weeks in Oahu. We will be mainly eating out, and partying a fair bit at night with the occasional day trip. Can you tell me how much for: Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Beer? Wine? Vodka & lemonade? :) Scooter hire? Taxis? Bus? Are there markets with cheap clothes etc? or only shopping malls? thanks so much!!! |

i know buses are around $2US a trip, easy to use too.
As for everything else. Oahu is far from cheap, especially if you want to eat out alot, or at your hotel. Most drinks you will be able to get on the cheap from the ABC stores (on every corner, literally) The big mall was good though, will have to do a check at home for the cost of things. But surely someone on here can give a better idea. Its not cheap thats what i will say. reminded me a bit of surfers paradise on speed actually....

For the clothes the swap meet at Aloha Stadium Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays they have most of the same stuff as the IMP but cheaper. The Ward Center and Ala Moana Mall have many places but alot different than the swap meet. Taxi from the airport is around $35 the Waikiki Express is $9 o/w and $16 r/t and probably slower than the taxi unless you are about the only ones on board. There is a great thread on tripadvisors called Waikiki cheap eats that covers almost everyplace in Waikiki. Hawaii can be as expensive as you make it.

My wife and I spent two weeks on three islands back in October. I blogged it all. Here is the page with all expenses listed:
http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87& It may help give you an idea of total costs involved because we tracked every penny spent.

Since I live here in Hawaii, I'll give you the prices of things in U.S. dollars and you can use the current exchange rate to keep track. THe last time we were in Australia, the exchange rate was $US1 = $AU 1.8, but I think things have changed a bit since then (I'm hoping for an excuse to go back and find out).
Anyway, for most good restaurants, expect to spend between $40-$50 for two people with wine or beer included. If you're going out, expect to pay around $4-$5 for a beer if you're getting a pint on draft, a bit less if you're getting a beer in a bottle over the bar. In a restaurant, an Austrailan Shiraz will run around $6.50 as will a good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The mai tai bar in the Ala Moana mall is a good place to go out drinking, as they have happy hour until 11:00. A pint of mai tai is only $4.00! This place is extremely popular, so get there early on a weekend. You'll also want a beach side drink at the royal Hawaiian Hotel. The prices are expensive (almost $10), but the drinks are strong and the view is worth it! You will definitely have a good time here! Any other questions? Kevin

Markets with cheap clothes: THe best place to find cheap clothes is the Flea Market at Aloha Stadium, which is held on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Mostly it's locals that go there but maby visitors have started to find out about it, since all the stuff in the Waikiki stores can be found here for less. THe Stadium is very close to Pearl Harbor, so if you plan it right you can do both on the same day.
