| Isle of Man | A little break to the Isle of Man - advice needed Posted: Mon February 12, 2007 11:20 AM UTC
Hi my 78 year old mum (with walking difficulties) has always wanted to see the Isle of Man (im not sure why but then ive never been so maybe im missing out on seeing nice things) So I am planning on taking her over the bank holiday weekend in early May. (good time to go anyone?)
Anyway i wanted some advice on where is the best place to stay for her to see the nice things (she wants to travel on the railway) Do i need to hire a car? she find it hard to walk around so presume i would need to. Places to visit? 3 night stay enough? Any other info any one can give me will be appreciated. Thanks a lot Jane (feag) |

Hi,
That would be a nice weekend to come as there is a Round the Island Yacht Race on the 6th May and all the boats will be in the bay. I would probably suggest staying in Douglas as its the centre and and where the main train station, tram stations are etc. It might be an idea to hire a car as the Island is quite hilly and some areas are steep (its ok coming down but going up can be a bit of a nightmare). If you would like me to send you some Tourist Information about the Island send me an e-mail with your address and I'll get them posted asap. (maps, info, whats on etc)

Well, I'm assuming you'll stay in Douglas because it's central in terms of facilities. You want to book hotel or B&B at the ferry end of Douglas in order to be handy for bus, train & taxi (steam train, that is, not the electric one, but you can get a horse-drawn tram along the prom to get to & from that.). I think the tourist site is www.visitiom.com I usually stay on Bucks Road - there's a cab office round the corner in Christian Street (I think - it's near there, anyway.) Loch Prom is the end of town you want.
If you look at the "Things to do" tips on my own IOM page, you'll see tips re a round the Island tour and re the museum. Having said that, if she's unsteady on her feet it's worth noting that you won't get far in the IOM without encountering a steep hill, so the regular coach trip might be a better idea.
