RE: Day trips from Whitby Posted: Sat February 10, 2007 01:53 PM UTC
Last time I was in Whitby, I left there one morning and headed for Keswick in the Lake District by public transport. It took all day and about four different bus trips (Whitby-Middlesborough-Newcastle-Penrith-Keswick). It was a cheap (you can get regional bus passes for travel with a particular bus company) and lovely way to see some beautiful countryside. This was part of a trip around the entire country at the time and Lake District is worth at least a couple full days on their own.
The trouble is, Whitby is not directly on a main rail line so you're not going to get anywhere quickly unless you're with an escorted tour.
Have you been in touch with Whitby Tourist Info, they should be easy to contact through a web search. They can tell you if there are any escorted tours. However, with Whitby being adjacent to its own natural park, I imagine most trips out are going to be to locales closer by, like Castle Howard. Happy trails!
