Great reply from effeti. Well done. As for Garda it is a great place to visit. I don't know where you are going to stay but would recommend the boat trips around the lake. Desunzano in the south is good. Limone in the north east is good. Malcesine on the east side of the lake is my favourite. Little cobbled streets wind around the village. Enough bars and restaurants to suit most tastes. The cable car up Monte Baldo is worth the ride for the views from the top. It can be very hazy and there can be big queues. Plenty of shope sell gifts of all sorts so don't worry about the prices. Beer prices are about the same as home and wine better value. Public transport isn't briliant but the boats are good value. Naturally pasta dishes are popular but there's lots to choose from. Don't worry about the lack of Italian. Most places have English menus and we had no problem in talking to some friendly locals. Garda is well worth going to.

Hi, my friend Francesco (ciao Francesco) told you about the markets.

Note tha there are some commercial center too and that the prices are high only on the touristic shops.

For the language don't worry, Lake of Garda has million people every year from Germany, Holland, Denmark, UK, Belgium and several other countries and local people can speck every language. And if they donn't know the language they will help you to understand using several languages until you will be happy.

From Garda if you have a car you can go to Verona my town and Francesco too), Mantova, Sirmione.
To go to Vebnice I suggest you the train, from Peschiera del Garda about 1 hours and half http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Take a ferry to go north on the lake until Riva del Garda

Go on the top of the mountain from Malcesine with the cableway http://www.malcesinepiu.it/eng/funivia/default.asp

and relax yourself and swim and eat and drink (not when you drive)

Ciao
Giorgio

To add something on the food. Main meals in restaurants can start with a starter called anti pasta. Cold meat plates are popular. The second course is the pasta dish and is really the main part of the meal. it's certainly the filling part and what a surprise Spaghetti Bolognese is popular! The main course is therefore more of a taster and if you don't realise this it can be a disappointment in size. Lamb chops are popular but are small and most red meat is cooked medium rare. Cafes are more likely to sell the one course main course yuo are more familiar with.
