Madeira Island Travel Forum

I'd like to spend there a week. Is it advisable to go therewithout booking a room? Where would you recommend to stay? in Funchal or in Porto Moniz.

Are there some interesting event or festival happening that month?

Yes Madeira is a good choice.
I do prefer Funchal -more to see around, and you can go for a ride (normal bus service or tourist bus) to some other places (I can give you some more tips if you want). I’ve been there some times (the last it was last summer) and always rent a car even just for 2 days to go around the island.
In my opinion it’s better to book in advance mostly because at that time of the year there’s lots of tourist coming to Madeira.
After April with "Flower Festivals", the festivities in June are fantastic - Saint António (yes the same as in Lisbon and Padova) on the 13th, Saint Joăo (John) all the week down to 24th (the largest festivities) and Saint Pedro (Peter) on 29th.
There’s also the fireworks festivals usually on Saturdays evening (very nice work with light and music... we have the same in Lisbon in September).
Actually in June there is the “Atlantic Festival” with lots of other cultural activities, from classic music to philharmonic bands, etc.

Ti assicuro che Madeira č fantastica (but stop in Lisbon for a “proper” VT Meeting hahaha)

Il clima č cosi fantastico come lo spacciano tutte le guide turistiche?
tu con che guida hai viaggiato? La devo ancora comprare (abbiamo appena deciso per madeira ma partiamo a fine luglio).
con l'inglese te la cavi o meglio munirsi di almeno un piccolo frasario?

Le mie guide preferite sono le Rough Guides. Non hanno foto, ma sono veramente ricche di informazioni.

ieri ho trovato un membro olandese o giů (o meglio "su") di li che č andata a Madeira 6-7 volte ma in fatto di ristoranti mi fido solo degli italiani...forse sbaglio! ma per i nordici appena sentono una verdura non surgelata si mangia bene....complimenti per le foto del matrimonio dei tuoi amici, sposa bellissima.

Io avevo trovato una pensione a buon mercato a Funchal sulle pagine di VT. Riguardo il cibo, sono uno che si adatta.
