Timetables first - here is a link to the best site.............. http://www.rail.co.uk/ukrail/planner/planner.htm
When you start thinking of prices, there are quite a few different types of tickets. One particular one that I'd mention is called an "Apex Return". If you know EXACTLY what train you want to travel out and return on {i.e. the date and the time of travel} - and you book at least one week in advance - you can save up to 40% on the cost of an ordinary return.
As far as general price enquires goes, I don't know of any website that gives up to date prices - I normally use the National Rail Enquiries line on 08457 484950 to find and compare all the prices.
Hope this is useful, Andrew

Try www.thetrainline.com for prices and times of trains across the UK. You can also purchase tickets online.

Quick "PS" to my above posting..... Don't rule out flying if you are going from London to either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Suggest try http://www.easyjet.com and you will see that it's possible to get a return flight can be as low as £35-£40 ...which, depending on when you travel, might work out cheaper than the train.

Hi Sharon,
We took the plane to Scotland from London. It is faster and less expensive.
See www.ryanair.com or www.easyjet.com.

Hi ya Sharon
I agree with Kodi, as I was with Kodi and yes it was actually cheaper to fly to Edinburgh from Luton Airport (london) than catch the train and much much quicker. Plus Easyjet were wonderful due to the hotel taking too long to check us out we missed our flight and they put us on the next one for just the cost of a smile, wonderful service.

I will check this too ! maybe indeed worth it. did it take you long time in both airports ? or is it going well like in regular flights in the big companies ?
Thanks.

Hi ya
We had about an 2 wait for the next flight so not bad at all. I think there is at least 4 flights each day to Edinburgh and I believe Ryanair do flights to Glasgow. There was cafes in the airport so we had a coffee and a sticky bun during our wait lol.

Hi Sharon:) Have you considered taking an overnight bus to Scotland? You can also take day buses through National Express buslines to a lot of destinations around the UK. These journeys take longer, but I've found the bus to be a lot cheaper than flying or taking the train (although in some cases not!). -Reon:)
