Isla Holbox Local Advice for Isla
Posted: Sat February 3, 2007 09:38 PM UTC
Hi. I am actually a frequent visiter of Isla Mujeres and I am so disappointed in what is has become. I found info about Holbox and it seems to be what IM used to be. I was hoping to hear from some locals, if they post here. I am putting together a plan to visit. I am not into the big resorts. A nice small hotel without all the "extras" will do fine. I also noticed the larger hotels seem to have the restaurants. What about local restaurants that aren't run by foreigners?

Thank you for any info!

Hello, I am not (at all :) a local of Holbox, however, I have been there several times and am quite striken with the place!

I am also very disappointed with what Isla Mujeres has become. We have found Holbox to be bitter sweet, unlike our first times at Isla (when we thought we had found an unsung paradise).

Holbox has it's good points, if you like absolute solitude you can find it there.

Rent a golf cart and go where you dont think you are supposed to.

Pure paradise there is reserved for those who dare.

And to answer your hotel question: Mawimbi seems to be the best as we have found. Dont forget bug spray. Really, Really good bug spray.

Thank you for your info! Did you take your children (I noticed them in the picture:). Mine have to isla and do well in Mexico they are 10,9&8). I didn't know if Holbox was too quiet for them. Thanks again!

I don't know what your kids might think, really. I saw kids that looked bored and then others that seemed to be about as happy on a beach vacation as kids can be :)

I havent taken our kids to Holbox, partly because I dont know if I could handle the stress. It is a stressful journey, and a bitter sweet experience. I would hate for them to get sick.

the best spot is la palapa and it is next to a locally owned full service excellent restaurant. there are plenty of local eateries if you go off the main plaza. small spots for empanadas etc.
