Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Kyoto-fu Hiratsuka to Kyoto
Posted: Thu February 1, 2007 08:11 PM UTC
Greetings,
I will be travelling to Japan for my first time next month Feb-March on business for 3 weeks. I will be staying in Takasaki for the first half of the trip and in Hiratsuka for the second half of the trip.

I will be working Monday-Friday and would like to visit Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto on the weekends. I have 2 weekends available. I am currently planning to visit Tokyo the first weekend from Takasaki. The second weekend I would like to visit Osaka and Kyoto.

Is Osaka/Kyoto "do-able" in one weekend travelling from Hiratsuka? This would be arriving Friday night and leaving Sunday night.

I need help with which route and train I should take to get me from:
Takasaki to Tokyo
Takasaki to Hiratuka
Hiratsuka to Kyoto
Kyoto to Osaka
Osaka to Hiratsuka

Can you also help me with costs and travel time associated with these train routes. Would I need to purchase individual tickets? or JR Pass?

I am also wondering if Kyoto/Osaka is too much for a weekend? Should I just do one city?

I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you in advance.

Hello Jay

Some information waht you want are the following.

1.Takasaki to Tokyo
If you use a super express train on JR Takasaki line from Takasaki to Ueno for 1hour 41 minutes, and then transfer to a local train on JR Yamanote line to Tokyo for 8 minutes.
If you use a Bullet train on JR Jyoetsu line from Takasaki to Tokyo, it takes an hour.

2.Takasaki to Hiratuka
Use the above mentioned train from Takasaki to Tokyo, and then a local train can be used on JR Tokaido line to Hitatsuka, it takes an hour.

3.Hiratsuka to Kyoto
From Hiratsuka to Odawara, take a local train on JR Tokaido line for 15 minutes.
From Odawara to Shizuoka, take a Bullet train Kodama for 50 minutes, and then take a Bullet train Hikari to Kyoto for one and half hours.

4.Kyoto to Osaka
The fastest way is to use a Bullet train for about 20 minutes.

I think you can travel in Kyoto and Osaka for a week end but you should make a detail itinerary where you visit and what to do.
