Victoria Falls Acceptable Currency at Zambezi Sun?
Posted: Thu February 1, 2007 08:08 PM UTC
Hi

We are staying at Zambezi Sun for 5 days as part of our honeymoon in June. Can anyway advise what is the preferred currency...read on a few postings US Dollars are preferred. Is this true...or should I get local currency. I assume "plastic" can be used in the resort for booking excursions, but for the more basic things like a few beer/meals etc, wat is the norm? I have been told we MUST pay our 2 way visa in Zimbabwe in US Dollars ( cash )

Also afer a few days relaxation wat are the recommended trips...hear the river rafting is good?? or any close safaris?...anyone stayed there in June to advise on likely temps/rain...think it should be fairly dry...any help would be much appreciated.

Everyone takes dollars but you sometimes get a better deal if you pay in pula.

The best place for a safari is Chobe in Botswana which has the greatest number of elephants in the world (over 100,000). It is possible to see it in a day trip but it is best to spend several days there.

Actually June is the start of the winter dry season. It probably won't rain a lot but the falls will be very wet. The view of the falls is better on the Zimbabwe side.

We were at the Royal Livingstone, which is literally right next door to the Zambezi Sun. Both are nice resort properties (we went shopping at the Zambezi Sun stores because they were cheaper!) and I think they're owned by the same people. We paid for everything either in US Dollars or on the credit card. I don't remember them taking the Zambian currency (kwacha) at all, and everything in the restaurants and stores is in US dollars. We just put everything on our room account whenever possible.

For extra trips, there's a little excursion/travel agency in the small shopping center between the two resorts, and they booked our daytrip to Botswana. For some reason, I think we had to pay in cash because I have a cash advance slip from a Zambian bank in my scrapbook. Just make sure you ask how to pay before committing to anything.

Zimbabwe border info: they only take cash, and I think you can pay in US dollars, Euros, South African rand, but I'm pretty sure they don't take the Zimbabwe dollar.

BE WARNED: At the Victoria Falls airport in Zimbabwe, you have to pay a fee to actually board the plane, and they only take cash. We didn't have any
cash, so we had to borrow 400 rand from another couple on the same flight. And FYI, the bank in the airport only dispenses Zimbabwe dollars, which they don't accept.

=)

Take US dollars or UK pounds only. Dont rely on your card or you might get screwed. I worked in africa for 5 years so i can give you some good advice. Also if you take cash you can pay in either local or usd / ukp. Like i said.....don't just rely on your card!!!!!!!

Do the rafting if you like adventure. As for something for honeymooners.....maybe a winedrift in a canoe a sunset, lion walk definitely, helicopter (30min)....you'll work it out when you get there. Have a good one
