| Brasov | Brasov -vs- Sighisoara Posted: Thu February 1, 2007 06:57 PM UTC
I want to spend approx. 3 days in Transylvania and don't know where to go. I've read Brasov is interesting but more touristic. What I'm looking for is a place with interesting architecture, scenery and with warm people, but free of touts as possible. I don't mind about museums, but wouldn't say no to a medieval castle.
Any suggestions? Or should I share my time to both places? I hope to be there in mid-May 2007 without pre-booking accommodation or train/bus. Will that be fine for both towns? |

Hello,
Both towns are really nice, if you have to choose I would go with Sighisoara. In mid-May you should get accomodation even without pre-booking. George

I agree with George. Brasov is a nice town and is wonderful with the mountains immediately behind the town. But Sig is more historically intact and has some wonderful architecture. It does not have the mountians immediately there, but is is build on a small hill with a river right below.
You cant go wrong with the people in either place.

You might also want to check out Medias, is not as known as Sighisoara or Brasov, still conserving the old town pretty well.
Anyway, I think in three days you could visit all of them and even Sibiu: stay one night in Brasov and one night in Sighisoara (there are trains connecting the two). So, if you are organized and don't wake up at midday ;) you could visit Brasov -> Sighisoara -> Medias -> Sibiu in three days. Brasov and Sibiu are big city, therefore expect them to be crowded, however may is not the most crowded period so this would help. don't hesitate to ask for more details ! Thanx a lot for the answers. Are there any special suggestions for accommodation of restaurant (local food but not tourist-oriented)?

In Sighisoara I like the restaurant placed in the same building with Burg hostel. Is very simple to reach it: as you look at the clock tower from the main square, to your left there are two streets leaving the main square: take the one to the left, a little bigger. The third (I think) house on the right hand has an Internet Café (don't confuse it with the ICafé that you see when you are in the main square) inside but also a nice restaurant. They have decent food (I don't record how much it can be considered tourist-oriented food) but I mainly like it because is a good sensation to eat in a XV century house that hasn't change much since the middle age :). There is also the one in the house where Vlad Tepes (dracula) was born, but I didn't eat there.
An also "Casa cu Cerb" - I understood this has really good food. In Brasov there is Mely Melo and another one that I always forget the name (right on the street descending from the Black church, about 100 m away from the square, on the right hand). Casa HIRSCHER is another good one in Brasov, also in the main square, Piata Sfatului Nb. 12-14. Once there, ask anyone and you'll get directions how to reach it (is a red house with some arcades) . In Sibiu there are few restaurant also in the main square. I would recommend the one to the left of the big tower. (if I remember well it's called even the tower [La Turn, in romanian], or something like this) All best, Radu www.outdoorholiday.com

Great! I'll keep that info. Thanks!
My last message has a typo ... of=or (accommodation or restaurant). Anything else out of the beaten path that I shouldn't miss? You seem to know a lot about this area.
