Phoenix Car hire/Super8 in Phoenix
Posted: Thu February 1, 2007 08:58 AM UTC
Hi, i am thinking of using this Motel,
Super 8 Motel -
Phoenix Airport Downtown
3401 E Van Buren.
Anyone have experience of this establishment ?
Also they have "Arizona leasing" car hire on site which looks very convenient, are they any better / worse than the big names in car hire ?
Any comments welcome,
Thanks in advance.

Per that Super 8: it's cheap and I've heard good things. However, that's a REALLY sketchy part of town. Lots of drugs and prostitution, but not in that particular hotel from what I understand. Just the neighboring ones. There's also nothing around there for food.

If I were you I would use this Motel 6

Phoenix East #0018
5315 E Van Buren Street

This part of Van Buren Street is slightly nicer, as there are some newly built upscale apartment complexes geared towards Scottsdale/Tempe/Chandler office workers and Arizona State University students, and only about 5-10 min east of that Super 8. You will have to drive to 44th Street or even into Tempe to find dining options. There is a small strip mall at Priest Drive and Washington, a short drive southeast, with a Moe's Mexican Grill, Pier 39 Pizza and a Starbucks.

Van Buren Street from 44th Street westward to the downtown buildings is indeed sketchy, esp. at night. The major national chain motels are OK but the older properties have devolved into transient skid-row-like flophouses.

Also, I would stick with the major national rental car chains like Hertz, Budget, Alamo, etc, and get your car from the Sky Harbor Airport facility, they just built a dedicated central rent-a-car building west of the main terminals, with shuttle buses.
