Maswik or Yavapai?? Posted: Wed January 31, 2007 02:36 PM UTC
We are planning on a visit to the canyon in March and the only lodges available are Maswik and Yavapai. Has anyone stayed at either and could reflect on the experience?
Thanks

Neither or on the rim but Maswik is a bit nicer in my opinion.
Note I am surprised there is no availability at the other lodges. March is not high season. I bet if you keep checking you can get one of the other lodges. When I was there in high season there were available rooms, likely due to cancellations.

Hello-
Late March is *VERY* busy at Grand Canyon. Spring Breaks start around then, thru about Easter. Make your reservations while you can. Not much difference between Maswik & Yavapai Lodges.

I stayed at Maswik a few years ago, in November, 2003. The rooms we fine. Simple and without air conditioning (I'm not sure if they had heat. That's something to check on in March). The food was not very good though. If I remember correctly, Yavapai had a better restaurant than the Maswik cafeteria. The GC lodge definitely did.
Since March is off-season, some of the properties may not be open and that may be the reason for the limited selection. The previous poster is right though that you may want to keep checking for cancellations.
Have a great time!

Having stayed in both I would say the biggest difference is location, although even that isn't much. Maswik is closer to the rim but Yavapai is not that far either. Maswik is also more 'modern', that is is you consider 60's-70's modern. So I would go with the cheapest.

RE: Maswik or Yavapai?? Posted: Wed February 7, 2007 09:14 PM UTC
I just stayed at Yavapai last August for the second time. Wow, can you ever see the stars from there. The Milky Way looked truely outof this world. (I'm from Iowa and we are at 900 ft elevation) - It is dark at Yavapai - that's why the views are great in the night sky. The other thing to consider is you are more than normal walking distance to the rim of the Grand Canyon.
I staye with my son two years ago in the Maswik room. Very close to the rim. You just have to walk over the railroad tracks and you're there. The eating choices are better along the rim by Maswik too. That's where we ate. It's up to you - the Maswik room with 2 queen beds is only $30 to $40 more. It is nice to just walk over to the rim from there. if you don't mind taking your car or shuttle you can still get there from Yavapai.
Rooms in both lodges are basically the same. Maswik might be a hair more updated. Yes, they have heat but no A C -
You can't lose with either selection. I hope this feedback helps you!

Yavapai is probably about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile into the Kaibab forest.
Eat by the rim though...I agree the food is weak at Yavapai and Maswik!
Have fun!
