| Monterrey | Moving to Monterrey... Posted: Tue January 30, 2007 12:21 AM UTC
My boyfriend and I are a Canadian couple looking into moving to Monterrey for work later this year and I have a few questions!
Is it a very expensive place to live? I am not concerned about rent, but what about cost of living (food, entertainment, etc)? I have a dog I am planning to bring...are there vets available? I know it's a fairly large city, is it safe? How far to the coast? Would I need a car or could we get around the city using the bus system? Thank you very much! |

Monterrey is one of the most expensive cities in Mexico, but still very cheap for Canadian standards.
Of course there are hundreds of vets around town. One of the best is a place called "Doggies" (http://www.doggies.com.mx/). Very experienced and reliable. Monterrey its safe, even with some recent drug related executions. It's better if you have a car, it's a very large city, but in case of emergency there are plenty of cheap taxis, fairly decent buses and also a subway. Good luck !

Monterrey is a large city, some areas can be fairly expensive but most of it is cheap (it's still within Mexico) There should be plenty of very good vets available so you shouldn't worry about that. It is safe but as everywhere else in the world it is never a good idea to go into a dark alley in the middle of the night. It's not too close to the coast but it could be a good alternative for a weekend off. A car would be a good idea, although there are plenty of buses and there is a metro system the climate in this semidesertic city can be very harsh and it is not always recomendable to spend an hour on public transport on a very hot day.

Hi Lauren, my husband was offered a promotion and asked to relocate to Monterrey. I'm not sure I want to do this because I'm a little concerned about the crime and violence I heard about in Monterrey. Have you received any other information. Please advice.
Thank you very much. Cary
