To get around Newcastle you can use the Metro (like the underground) to get around, I don't know if you're flying in but it also goes to the airport, and if you want to visit a tacky seaside resort it also stretches as far as Whitly Bay.
A visit to Gateshead is a must, only south of the Tyne, the Metro goes here too, you can visitthe new Sage, the Norman Foster designed concert hall, you can just go in and wonder about, there's a shop and cafe, there's the Baltic art gallery, I've not seen many good exhibitions there but the cafe's good and if you get to the very top you get great views of the Tyne and its bridges. Especially the Millenuim Bridge, it's nice to see at night as it's lit up nicely.
If any of you are into football you can visit St.James' Park, it's in the centre. The centre is great for shopping, lots of arcades, indoor markets, when I was last there there was a band playing in the town square. There's loads of charity shops on the street leading into town from the station too.
