I am going to Montego Bay in February. I am wondering what the currency is there. Can I use American money or will I need to change it over into Jamaican currency?

Marlaina,If you are an American bring American $$$. When you get to the airport and through the first set of customs directly in front of you will be the Cambio or money exchange.Change yourself $ 100.00 into $ Ja's.You will receive around Ja 64 per US dollar. This will compute to $JA 6400 to hold you over until you get to a bank or ATM where the exchange rate is better.Everything is relative, for example a beer will run you around $JA 100 which is about $1.75 US. Do the same if you have Canadian money or euros. If you are bartering for souvineers sometimes the US $ will get you a little more leverage than when dealing in $JA's.They like the US dollar and know where they can get a better exchange rate than we could.Go and enjoy.Where are you staying. Sometimes its best to use the currency of that country. Because there still are some places that don't take foreign currency. Change about $100us at the airport. Then find a bank or atm they give ok rates. Over all I find Western Union cambio/money exchange to have the highest value for your dollar.
