Tipping/taxis

Dear VT'rs,
First of all, thank you to all of you who had helped me with your replies to my previous posts about Rio. They have surely served to prepare a safe and easy trip, and can't wait to start the fun! :-)
I had two final questions before departing this Saturday:
1)Do you tip the waiters at restaurants? At the airport? How much should be the tipping?
2) How much would it cost a taxi from Ipanema to Botafogo?
Thank you!

Dear Flor de Maria,

De nada. A service charge (of 10%) is normally added to bills in restaurants: if it is, there's no need for an additional tip, but if it isn't, this is roughly what you should give the waiter. Taxi-drivers don't expect to be tipped.

Taxis aren't expensive: from Ipanema to Botafogo (a route also served by safe, air-conditioned buses, charging Rs$5 - around US$1.50) would probably cost around Rs$15-20.

Have a wonderful trip!

Yep the 10% service charge is automatically added to your bill and thta is it. I love this system, because it never leaves any doubt, like in almost all other countries in the world.

the 10% tip that is added is actually the waiters wage.
he gets paid according to how much the costumers spend.
