Going to be in Cleveland next weekend
Posted: Mon January 22, 2007 04:56 AM UTC
To attend the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show...DH doesn't want to miss it. My interests, on the other hand, lie more in gardening. Does anyone have any recommendations for me on gardens, greenhouses, nurseries or botanical parks which might be worth seeing when we are there? Keep in mind that the place should be open to the public...in January (no less). Thanks for any tips or recommendations you can offer.

If you like gardens then Cleveland Botanical Garden is the place to go. A link to their website is above. It is a wonderful place. The glasshouse is the highlight of the place with two different environs: Costa Rica rainforest and Madagascar desert. My wife and I spent hours in there last summer. Winter weekend hours are Saturday 10am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5pm.

Because the Botanical Garden is also right next door to the Cleveland Museum of Art - I would normally recommend spending a couple hours in there also. However, the museum is currently undergoing some construction and their primary collections are closed. If you want to see if anything is open at the museum you can check their website at http://www.clevelandart.org/

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is also close by if that interests you. There link is http://www.cmnh.org/site/planavisit_map.aspx

If it was spring or summer I would also recommend Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, but they are closed for the winter now I believe.

Anyway, good luck and I hope you enjoy Cleveland. For other interesting places to see and some good local restaurants check out Erikatheskysailor's travel page for Cleveland - it's the best.

Also, I'd like to recommend the free Rockefeller Greenhouse: http://www.rockefellergreenhouse.org/

Hi! Thanks so much for the recommendation. I also had a look at your Cleveland and Akron travel pages. The Vietnamese restaurant sounds good--we might have to check that out...unless you know of a really good Indian restaurant?

If you live in the Cleveland/Akron area, you might find a weekend in Parkersburg, WV enjoyable. We are only about 2 hours south of Akron--just a straight shot down I-77. If you come in the May-October time period, there is certainly a lot to do--especially if you enjoy looking at historic homes and plantations. Check out the Parkersburg travel pages for some ideas on things to do there....

Anyway, thanks again for you suggestions and Happy Traveling! :)

Hi Erica, Thanks for the reply. I visited some of your Cleveland pages--WOW! Thanks for all the hard work I know you must have put into them. I read your review of the Cafe Tandoor and we may eat there...although I'd really like to check out the place WheninRome recommended also! Maybe we will have to stay overnight instead of making it a day trip--seems there is more to Cleveland than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Holden Arboretum (20 mi. East of CLE in Kirtland) is having an Orchid show until Feb. There may not be many flowers outside, but the hiking is still wonderful!

Thanks for the comments. I used to spend quite a bit of time in WV whitewater kayaking, but I didn't spend much time in Parkersburg. I'll have to check it out. Thanks.

I don't know of any good Indian places. There probably are some though.
