Where to go in Naples?
Posted: Wed July 30, 2003 09:53 AM UTC
My wife and I will be stopping at Naples on a cruise ship, in early September. We have already holidayed in Sorrento so have walked up Vesuvius, visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, Amalfi Coast etc. Any ideas or should we just stay on board!

Apparently the old centre of Naples is a great place - you need to be careful for pick-pockets but they have been working hard to stop the street crime and things have reduced! You get the best pizza in the world in Naples so if anything get off and look for a pizza place!!! It'll be worth it. But I believe the city centre is nice - there is the Museo Nazionale which has a large collection of Roman Empire artefacts - many of the items from Herculaneum and Pompeii are on display there. The Umberto Gallery is a glass roofed shopping plaza much like the one in Milan, there's the Castel Nuovo and Castel Sant'Elmo which sits on the hill and gives a great view over the city - you can get there on the Funicolare Centrale (Funicular Railway). Don't stay on board - you'll miss one of Italy's most vibrant cities - it may not have as many classical features as say Florence but there are some great things to see and the food is spectacular!!! Just be careful and watch your bags!

Now why on earth would you go on a cruise and then just stay on the ship? Definitely go for a walk around the old town. Stop for lunch and have one of the best pizzas in the world, then go for a sfogliatelle (sweet cheese filled pastry - and yes, my suggestions usually do involve food!).

Take the funiculare up the hill for a great view or just walk around and enjoy an interesting city. Have a look at some Naples pages here for more ideas.

Diane, you must have been typing at the same time (only faster!) as me. :o) I forgot about the Umberto Gallery - very pretty. We didn't do a whole lot in Naples except shop and eat - and I would go back for more!
