| Girona | Coastal resorts Posted: Thu January 18, 2007 11:27 AM UTC
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a few resorts on the north of the Costa Brava where I could stay for a couple of nights each. I am looking for a quiet but not too quiet place with a good selection of hotels, restaurantes and bars, preferably on the coast but if you know of any inland towns worth a stay include them as well. Also is Girona a good choice for a couple of nights stay. Cheers Geoff |

If you're going to stay in Girona, I'd suggest a daytrip to Banyoles to rest on its big lake. Form Banyoles you can go to Belsalù. This is a beautiful Medieval village. Thi excursion should be done by bus from Girona.
I also went to Sitges. It was one of my daytrips from Barcelona. Sitges has a very long beach, three museums and several shops. Ciao!

Sitges is south of the Costa Brava. The Costa Brava (Brave coast) is north of BCN, in direction of France. South of BCN, you have the Costa Garraf and Costa Dorada.
I'd recommend a visit to any of the small towns on the Costa Brava. Aigua Blava & Timireu are small and quiet. Cadaquez is a wonderful stop in the northern area of Costa Brava.

Thanks everyone,
Cadaqués sounds good to me. I could do with another port of call to the south of Cadaqués. Also what about staying in Girona or would I be better heading for Barcelona? Cheers Geoff

Girona is a town with some sights to see. Barcelona has lot to offer.
I'd choose to stay in Barcelona and do some daytrips from there; including Girona and some other places. Ciao!

I love Empuries ruins and also Ullastret ruins + Peratallada village
They are not so far as Cadaqués, and some landscapes are beautiful You can find a lot of good restaurants in the area like: http://www.hotelelfort.com/restaurant/es/

YOu have to visit Cadaques it is the prettiest and most interesting village in the area - Used to be the abode of Salvador Dali and you can visit his house. Very trendy but still quiet at times. ALso should visit San Pedro de Rodas - magnificent monastery in the Pyrenees. there is a nice hotel in Cadaques Playa SOl or rooms can be rented quite easily

Hi
In Baix Emporda, Tamariu is probably the best place with good but not overexpensive restaurants next to the beach and no traffic. Llafranc, the next bay, is also very good but it is very popular with Barcelonans particularly at the weekend and can get crowded. It has the exceptionally good hotel of Hotel Llevant but this is expensive and can be noisy.Calella is perhaps a bit too busy. Palafrugell, a small typical town, just inland from Tamariu and LLafranc (about two miles) is very nice. It has a partcularly good traditional but modern hotel in a quiet location in the centre called Hostal Plaja (www.hostalplaja.com). The hotels at Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella can be very expensive. To the south, San Feliu de Guixols is a very interesting and characterful place. Further north in Alt Emporda, the Rosas bay is incredibly beutiful with clear views up to the Pyrenees. L'Escala is a very nice place and the Greaco-Roman settlement of Empuries is close-by as is the very beautiful National Park at Aiguamolls de L'Emporda. Estartit is perhaps too touristic.Figueras is a terrific typically mediteranean small town and the very interesting wine village of Perelada is close. Also the coast up to the French border is very beautiful - places like Llanca, Port de la Selva and Cadaques and the views from St. Pere de Rodes are breathtaking. North of Llanca the towns are rather run-down. Hope this helps. Ian Bethell
