Posted: Thu January 18, 2007 10:03 AM UTC
Hi,

My boyfriend and i are desperate to find some info about a cheap accomodation called the PARATROOPER in AITUTAKI. e are staying for 7 nights in march 2007 and need very cheap accomodation. We were told by someone that they are currently priced at $10 a night...i have been trying to get in contact with them to confirm this but no one is anwering the phone. Can someone please help answer below question? all we really need is a priv room with a double bed

-what is the price of a private room with a double bed(is this avail?)
-is the price per room or per person? we'd like a price per room
-is there electricity?
-is there shower/toilet/kitchen? is it shared with other guests?
-how do we book? (get in contact with them?) we have tried the ph...not answering
-is bed linen and pillows and sheets provided or do we bring our own?

if there is any help that someone can give us it would be very very appreciated as we are getting desperate at this stage...right now the prices of $40-60 a night per room is not an option for us

please someone with any info let me know and email jangssi@hotmail.com

thank you in advance

I don't know where you are right now, but I think you should find who told you that and have them show you where you saw that. The $40-60 is about right from what I have found. For about $17 a night there are dormitory type rooms on the island but I don't think that is what you are looking for. I did see a couple of references to a $10 discount for rooms booked before December 31st,2006 but that date ha passed. Make sure you have the correct number and keep calling. It is a self-catered place so maybe there isn't someone at the desk always. However, if it truly is $10, you get what you pay for. Try contacting the Cook Islands tourism department for more info.

Last July my daughter and I spent 10 days on Aitutaki and passed by the Paratroopers in Amuri several times. It is a budget place and is not beachfront. I don't know the prices nor what is provided (but it is amongst the cheapest), but sheets should be there.
Of what I heard locally the owner of the Paratroopers is an ex New-Zealand para who settled in Aitutaki. As often happens in small societies, "strangers" are not that welcome and he is being "boycotted" somewhat. You won't find too many references to him in the offical tourist information. His phone nr though is listed in the Oyster Net Yellow Pages of Aitutaki.
Of what I know, most people who stay at the Paratroopers do not have any reservations, they just show up and ask for a room. Note though, that upon arrival at Rarotonga, you need to fill out the name of the place you are staying (officially you need a reservation but that is never checked).
As Dude says, keep trying the phone. Remember when you go to Aitutaki: that is island time! So be patient.

There is an "airport" bus that meets each incoming flight. The driver will come up to you to ask where you need to go. Just tell him you want the Paratroopers. He will know where it is. NZD8/per person.

I stayed at Tom's Beachcottage in Amuri on Aitutaki. Nice place
A double room is NZD 48 per night.
He also picks you up and drives you back to the airport.
