| Bolzano | Information on hiking for 50 year olds Posted: Thu January 18, 2007 03:49 AM UTC
My three friends and i are planning on coming to bolzano in mid may.
we want some detailed information about walking for moderately fit 50 yr olds. Walks of 2-3 hours duration would be good. We are also photographers, so will want good scenery to shoot. We are after specific details ie where the walks starts, how to get to and from the start finish of the walk ie public transport (or if a car is required). Any more info would be great! |

I would recommend not to stay in Bolzano but closer to the mountains. For instance in Kastelruth (Seiseralm) or Wolkenstein (Val Gardena).
Personally we do like Kastelruth most, rather authentic and with a lot of walking tracks and information about transportation. The websites of Kastelruth have detailed information about walks: - www.val-gardena.com - www.kastelruth.com

We are trying to keep our accomodation budget to a minimum , so the plan is to stay in the youth hostel in Bolzano; would you know of any like accomodations in the areas you have advised on staying ie further into the mountains???

Really don't know, because we always had accommodation in hotels or guesthoues.
Check the websites I mentioned for cheaper accommodation. Staying in Bolazano means losing a lot of travelling time to reach the 'real' Dolomites.

In 2005 I spent some days in Brixen/Bressanone, close to Bozen/Bolzano.I was able to do some hiking, the paths started right in town and went up to the mountains. (No climbing, but hiking). I didn't need a car. There is also public transportation to some of of the villages higher up in the mountains.
I got a very good small booklet which explained all about the various hikes. Since I stayed in a hotel, I don't know anything about hostels there, but I found the tourist information very helpful. For some pictures and more information of the area you can have a look at my Bressanone page. It's not very high in the mountains, but the scenery is beautiful.
