Bari Drive from Rome to Bari
Posted: Wed January 17, 2007 04:50 PM UTC
Coming over for the Scotland Italy game and we are thinking about hiring a car and driving from Rome to Bari on the wednesday and back to rome on the thursday - can anyone advise me how difficult a car journey it would be for someone who has never driven in europe before? also how long the trip would take? the train would cost us 76 euro's each return and there is 4 of us and it would be much cheaper to hire a car and drive - then we could spend our saving on a few more bottles of peroni!!!!! thanks for any help

Hi,
from Roma to Bari you have 435 km, about 4 hours and 30 minutes.

You must take the A1 higway direction Napoli until Caserta, after go on the
highway Caserta => Salerno for abt 25 km and follow the highway to Canosa for abt 100 km and follow to Bari for abt 100 km again

Have a nice trip

As Giorgio says, it's highway of one sort or another most of the way. You can see the trip he described at www.viamichelin.com (as I recall, he told you to go by way of Naples, which may not be the most direct path, but has better roads).

Note that the ICPlus train (as opposed to the Eurostar) is slightly cheaper: 72 euro round trip, but even taking full insurance (as most car renters should do in Italy), two days in a car should be cheaper than nearly 300 euro (but do check - between the rental, insurance, and petrol, using a rent car in Italy is NOT cheap). Note that www.viamichelin.com will also estimate petrol charges as well as tolls...

thanks for that bill - things have now moved on a bit there are now 8 of us and we can get a minibus for £123.00 plus fuel and road tolls so split between 8 of us it works out far cheaper than the train

8!? Yikes! Will Bari ever be the same??? ;-)

I see that viamichelin.com suggests that the tolls and petrol will cost another 60 euro, so you're still less than 200 euro, split 8 ways.

Note that there is a chain of chain of rest stops/restaurants/whatever called AutoGrill in Italy. These are quality places to stop - clean and both hot and packaged foods to go (oh, and petrol). See http://www.autogrill.it/site/it/dove_ci_trovi/toMap.htm and drill down on the map to see locations on your route (in Italian only, but you can read a map, right?).

Oh, and I keep forgetting how slanted Italy is. The Rome to Bari route is nearly a straight line...I keep thinking that you drive south from Rome to Naples, then take a left to cross the mountains to Bari, but, of course, you drive southeast to Naples, and then keep driving southeast some more to cross the peninsula to Bari...oh well...;-)

Perthpar, please tell! Which rental company are you using?

That is a great price for that car for two days!

It isn't difficult to drive from Rome to Bari, but maybe the train could be more cheap...

By car: Rome-Bari 430 Km - toll 25euro - h 4.30
Visit the internet site www.autostrade.it to see the details of the journey

By train: there is the low-cost TrenOk Roma-Bari and viceversa at 9 euro(limited seats - h 5 - www.trenitalia.it)
