Hi,
I stayed in a very cheap room in Gang 2, not far from the railway station in July last year. The place was called Losmen Anda and the room was only 20,000 with its own attached bathroom. There is lots of accomodation in the back packer area for around about 30-35,000/night. I was just really lucky with my room, spent one night in another room for 35,000, got talking to an Indonesian gy and aske dif there were any other cheaper rooms and he took me to Anda and luckily their only room at 20,000 was vacant so paid up front and moved in the next morning. Spent one week or more there because it was so cheap. Pamela.

I just know it is in Gang 2. about the middle.
There are two Gangs- long pathways off the road that runs past the railway station. This is where all the back packer accomodation is situated. Will not be difficult to find. If you are not lucky to get the 20,000 room there are lots of other rooms for 25,000 and upstairs is about 30,000. In Gang 1. up near that road I mentioned you will 2 or 3 food stalls with the best food for 3,000-4,000 rupiah- so cheap and great food. I ate lunch or my evening meal every day and with my 20,000 rupiah room I lived a very very cheap existence in Yogjakarta. Only expense was the internet. Even met up with a Welsh guy Mark who used to teach English in Jakarta and he had hired a motor bike and wanted some company so I spent the afternoon with him visting Klaten one of the places destroyed by the earthquake. Had such a very memorable afternoon with the survivors, laughing and giggling and joking around. Indonesian people are remarkable how they deal with adversity. That day for me had begun at 1.30 am when I had done a car trip with two girls from Slovenia up to see Gunung Merapi at the height of her erupting- we all sat transfixed watching the lava erupt and flow down the sides of the mountains. So exciting/frightening at the same time because at the time in early July we had no idea if the mountain would erupt and we may not have survived!! We stayed until aafter sunrise- fantastic experience. If you get a chance, go down to the beaches south of Yogjakarta, namely Parangtritis, Baron, Sundah, Kukup and Krackel. I love it down there, visited in 2000 and went back down again in July 2006 with a parking man who got his friend's motor bike and we spent the day ( 8-9Hrs) touring around down there and even went to see the hut Budi had built near the beach yrs before when he spetn some time down there doing batik work for sale. Will try to put up some photos on websjots soon and post the link here for you to see. Pamela.

Hi, Take a walk from RAILWAY Station and head on to Malioboro street up to Malioboro Shopping Mall, just on the left side of the mall you can see a small street behind, it was a Gang (small street) called SOSROKUSUMAN, go inside the gang and you can find many many cheap accomodations (inthe range of Rp.30,000 to less than Rp.100,000) both side of the gang. Please Check Hotel Puri at Sosrokusuman No.22 with phone number +62.274.514107, the clerk will show you their room and other condition, but if you are find this is not allowed condition for you , please not tobe hesitate to tell the clerk and they will heartfully a nice help with no charge to take you to the others nearby until you get the suitable one, because they keep a well cooperation between the hotels. From The Railway Station to the Gang is only 15 minutes walking and the place was safe for foreigner. Have a nice trip to Yogyakarta
