| Newcastle upon Tyne | Indian relocating from Kent to New Castle - How good/safe/friendly is life out there? Posted: Mon January 15, 2007 01:50 PM UTC
Hi I am an Indian considering relocating to New Castle after having stayed for an year in Kent. I have heard a lot about the weather, beautiful countryside, culture, strong accent etc but not sure about people's attitude towards racism. I have a family(with a new born) so would like find out as much as possible about the place and be sure before I make a decision. I am basically looking at having a nice pleasant, friendly and peaceful life out there. I have travelled quite a lot and stayed in various western countries and haven't faced many problems till now, but many people have warned me about the racism being a major problem in the north and around New Castle. Would like to have my facts right from people actually living there rather than base my decision on rumours and hear-say. Would appreciate inputs on this.

You will find no problems, there is a strong communty who all look after each other, plenty of shops etc to cater for all your needs,I teach alot of the ethic community and you will find most of the community are now 3rd-4th generation geordies, Various estates in the area to suit all costs of housing,
LIke most cities there is the odd ocurrance of racism , as long as you support Newcastle you will no problems, any further advice let me know and I can put you in touch with a local community officer

I was going to say a similar thing as above.
All cities/towns/villages will have problems, Newcastle is no worse than others. Being a large city it will have a bigger number of imigrations than smaller, more insular towns/villages. And with its long fishing history a great deal of races have passed through its ports already.

I entirely agree. Any city is likely to be more tolerant of 'incomers' (whatever their origin/colour/beliefs etc) than villages, but I am sure you will find no more racism in the North/Newcastle than anywhere else in the UK. The vast majority of people are absolutely fine, wherever you are(as I hope you have already discovered in Kent).

Like the other 3 have said, you should not encounter any more racism in Newcastle than anywhere else in the UK. There are bigots no matter where you go.
The one thing you will notice however is the weather, it gets cold up here in winter. A winter in Kent is nothing compared to the cold snaps you will find here.
