| Antarctica | Working a voyage to Antarctica Posted: Mon January 15, 2007 12:17 PM UTC
Hi,
My girlfriend and I havve sailed to the Arctic a couple of times now including completing the Northwest Passage in 2003. I am now involved in singlehanded yacht racing and Zoe is looking for boats and various ways in order to work a passage to Antarctica. Has anybody had any experiance of this or any suggestions, we would be very happy to hear of your ideas. Many thanks, Andrew Wood |

I've been to Antarctica six times, but always by small luxury expedition cruise ship. I'm sure this is not what you are looking for, with all your worldwide sailing experience. I've rarely seen a yacht down there, so that would be a challenge to find -- I'd suggest asking in one of the forums of the various sailing magazines. Then, I'd also suggest that you look at the website of IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators), which has the precise rules of conduct for Antarctica -- which are stingent. Also the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch might be of some assistance. Even if Zoe could find a yacht/ship to get there, you can't just hop off and set up a tent there. She'd be better off trying to find a cruise ship position as a lecturer on polar waters, if she could pull that off.
Most all "traffic" to ANT goes from either Ushuaia in Chile to the Antarctic Peninsula, or from Hobart, Tasmania, or Bluff, New Zealand, if that is any help. It is much rougher to cross the Ross Sea than the Drake Passage. The Falkland Islands also generate some rare yachting activity to Antarctica, but as I mention, it is rare. Good luck!

Hi
I'm a sailor and i have a small experience at single hand my 36'sailboat. I recommend that you visit the site of SSCA www.ssca.org and go to discussions group. After that chose some questions about sailing at Antartida. I'm sure that 's help you. HRod
