Beijing Beijing transportation IC card

I bought a Beijing transportation IC card as I heard that I could take buses and subway lines at cheaper fares with this card. However, I am not aware of exact discount ratio. It seems that it differs from the routes. Can anyone tell me about the fare rule of Beijing public transportation system in case of using IC card?

Then, for the buses below 900 above 500, does it mean that the fare differs depending on how far I go? Should I make my card read by sensor twice(getting in & out)?
