| Darwin | Snakes in the Top End Posted: Sun January 14, 2007 01:55 AM UTC
I spent about 6 weeks in Darwin a few years back, I was a little suprised by the lack of killer snake stories. Sure I heard a couple of stories of some blokes best mate picking up a King Brown while drunk and getting bitten, but thats about it. I'm just curious about the prevalence of venomous snakes in the Darwin region. I know they're there but are they common? If I had a house in Darwin (which I hope to in a few years) am I likely to see the odd one in my yard? Or are they mostly out in the National Parks?

If you mean in the Darwin suburbs, there's not many snakes around because of all the dogs, cats, people and cars. It's hard for snakes to survive in those conditions. But they're not confined to national parks either, they can't read signs so they're not even aware of whether they're in a national park or not.

LOL, ya I was highly suspect that they couldn't read signs :) What I meant I guess was are they mostly out in the bush/woodland/savannah instead of within the Darwin suburbs.

Some suburbs are on the edge, near the bush, so there'll always be some snakes coming around at some time. So it will depend where your house is. No one really worries about them. Just remember they mostly come out at night here.
