| Meteora | Tours to the monasteries available at Kalampaka? Posted: Sat January 13, 2007 05:00 AM UTC
I am considering a train trip from Athens to Kalampaka in order to tour Meteora. Likely that I would go up the morning of one day and return the afternoon of the next. Would I have an easy time finding a tour or driver in Kalampaka to visit the monasteries?
Is lodging available near the train station? Much appreciated; very excited to be visiting Greece fot the first time in April. Dale |

I don't think there are trains going to Meteoras. Long ago I went there from Athens by bus. The journey took around five hours with a break. I suggest to look for an accomodation in Kastraki. This is a village at the foot of Meteoras. From there you can catch a bus to the monasteries, or you can go there by foot. It is a long way though. There are six monasteries to visit. You can go there by yourself. The admission fees are cheap.
Enjoy Meteoras!

Ive just got back from Greece. There is train going to Kalambaka from Larissa station. See my tip. There are plenty logding available at the town and near by the train station. Rent a car to explore those monasteries.

Thanks for your tips on travel in Greece. I will also be traveling off-season (going in April) and made a reservation for an inexpensive place in Kalampaka for three nights. Glad you had a good time there. Dale
