ive been through kumamoto on my way to Aso san and i would recommend that your girlfriend goes here if she can. Hello kitty Kumamoto is also the cutest - she's wearing a little bear skin on her head awwww. seems liek a nice place but like way off the beaten track lol, the train started going backwards at one point!

I lived in Kumamoto for a year - it is a lovely place. It isn;t too big or too small - there are plenty of chances to meet Japanese and foreign people, there are some good bars and restaurants in the city, and the countryside, which is so close to the city, is stunning.
I'd recommmend visiting one of Kumamoto's many onsen resorts - they are magic. I'd also recommend subscribing to the Kumamoto online community group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kumamoto-i/interrupt
