Leptis Magna Worth the trip?
Posted: Wed January 10, 2007 08:51 AM UTC
I am considering a trip to Libya (Tripoli/Leptis Magna) later this year.

I have just returned from a trip looking at the Roman sites in Tunisia and wonder if Leptis Magna will be disappointing or is it worth the visit?

Leptis Magna is well worth the trip, and while you're in Tripoli, go to Sabratha and Villa Sileen too, and have dinner at the restaurant right beside the Aurelian arch in the middle of Tripoli's medina. I'm going for my second visit in 12 months and can't waitto get there.

I haven't been to Tunisia (other than to the airport) but I did spend 19 days in Libya in Oct/Nov 06. Leptis Magna is well worth the visit as are Cyrene and Sabratha. I am also planning a return visit to Libya. It is a great country with lots of very interesting places to visit. And the people are wonderful, too!

Thank you both for the insight.

I think we have pretty much decided to go to Tripoli and Leptis Magna - and if time permits, possibly further afield..

Tripoli is a fairly quiet capital city, with a small medina and excellent museum. Leptis Magna and Sabratha are both more complete ancient cities than you can see in Tunisia. Libya is not a tourist country like Tunisia though. This has its pros and cons. It makes travel much more expensive and difficult. Libyan cities are much drabber and have much poorer infrastructure than Tunisian cities.

You will not be allowed to visit any important site, like Leptis, without a local guide, who will cost you 50 LD. To stay in a hotel like a good tourist hotel in Tunisia or to eat in a good restaurant will cost you MUCH more. All signs are in Arabic only, by law. Also, remember that alcohol is prohibited in Libya.

If you really love ancient cities and have plenty of money to spare, then it's worth coming here.

I've been to Leptis Magna twice (most recently in March this year), Sabratha once, my husband has visited both places several times. We have never had to use a guide. We've usually make a private arrangement with a taxi driver in Tripoli for the day for travel there and back and for him to wait for us, bought our entry tickets at the gate and gone all over the sites on our own. Leptis certainly won't disappoint you - it's a wonderful site and the relatively small number of other tourists you'll share the place with make visiting a real pleasure. You'll find you may well be all on your own in some areas of the site and the atmosphere is extraordinary.

concerning cultural tourism Libya considered as one of the richest area, and lately local authority established and put a lot of facilities to develop the sector of tourism.
all here are doing the best to make the sector of tourism in libyan competitive.
since a few years the tourist infrastructure were terrible!.
by the way we are a local libyan tour operator.
