Frankfurt Frankfurt to Prague with a concentration camp visit in the middle
Posted: Tue January 9, 2007 10:04 PM UTC
I have a business meeting in Frankfurt Germany in 3 weeks and then I am taking 4 days to see some things before flying back to the US on the 5th day. My thoughts are to take one day to visit a concentration camp and then head over to Prague (via airlines) for 3 full days, where I will fly home from PRG.

My question is, what is a recommended camp that I should see? Would I take a train to it? And can it be accomplished in one day?

How about Buchenwald concentration camp just outside Weimar... you could take go by train from Frankfurt, stay in Weimar also visiting Goethe's house and other cultural highlights there. The route then would be train all the way to Prague via Dresden, another city well worth making a stop.

In the Czech Republic there is Terezin concentration camp but I have not been there myself so I cannot tell the connections.

With Buchenwald or Dachau this makes no sense, as you already have covered approx. half of the route to Prague.

> And can it be accomplished in one day?
Incl. thr trip Frankfurt-Prauge: in the case of Buchenwald or Dachau: not really. At least if you want to spent some time at these memorial sites.
Theresienstadt/Terezin can be done as a day trip.

I did have the experience of going to Buchenwald three years ago. I highly suggest it. I had the honor of my friend taking me. i don't know how this compares to other camps (it is the only one I have been to), But I highly recomend it. I also don't know about the time factor, I was staying in Erfurt, but it sounds like the two previous replies can help you there.

Buchenwald is different from Terezin :
In Buchenwald you see the entrance-gate, the fence around a wide empty area, the gas-ovens and a few barracks in a large distance, it is about 15km out of Weimar and looks a bit like a museum
Terezin is a fortified village since the 17th century, it was built as a prison-camp then and finally transfered to a Nazi-KZ. Many streets still look the same as in 1940, it is much more touching in my opinion and an easy daytrip from Prague (also by organized tours)

sounds to me as though Terezin might be the better choice in this case!
