Nottingham Applying to Nottingham Trent (but dont know what its like) your advice much appreciated...

Hi, ive lived in the Cambridge area all my life, but moved out to Malaysia 2 years ago and am now applying to Nottingham Trent University for 2007 (but cant visit it as im living abroad). Im really tempted to put it as my first choice but i havent actually been there myself (my brother tells me its a lively party city) and its nicknamed 'tottingham' apparantly, so all in all it sounds a quality place to live. Can anyone give any advice on the Uni itself? or what its actually like to live in Nottingham? Im an 18 year old bloke whos looking to have a good time at uni, and like to party. thanks for any help in advance.

Presumably you've looked at the uni website? What is says is true, I think; certainly people I know who have gone to uni in Nottingham have enjoyed the city very much (although some areas have high crime levels). It's got a good academic record, but only became a university in 1992; before that it was a polytechnic.

The relevant Sunday Times 'Good University Guide'page is on:

I went to Trent and I loved it.
Nottingham is a great city, yes it does have dodgy areas (St.Annes and Sneinton being two of the worst) and high crime levels, we got broken into by, we found out later, a group of Indian boys stealing from their own kind, we were just unlucky students.
The uni does have a high reputation for getting work after, or its ex-students being in work after graduating.
What course are you looking into by the way?
I did Decorative Arts so know more about the art/design side of the uni.
Nottingham has a new tram system which makes it easier to get around, I lived in Forest Fields and Radford (Another dodgy area) and the tram runs behind the Asda, which is handy for your cheap food shopping.
It has a great night life, lots of live bands, well my favourite club closed down, but there's so many more sprung up to take its place. There's Sneinton market, and unfortunatly Victoria market has closed, was good for cheap fruit and veg. There's the Lace Market and Hockley areas for lots of trendy bars and clubs, there's a fair share of horrible clubs too, though it depends what you're into.
Since the huge Warner Brothers cinema opened there's lots of bars under and around there, close to the Moulin Rouge fish and chip shop for your after clubbing food.
Rent when I was there was about £40-45 a week, but I've heard it's gone up quite a bit since then.
Nottingham also has an Ikea, which is very handy for setting up a flat. Afraid I can't help you out on the girl front, I didn't pay attention to my own sex. But I've heard the proportions have levelled out now.
Good luck, feel free to ask me more if you want to know more specific about the city or uni.

Do you want to live in student accommodation? If so rememeber that the Clifton Campus is two miles out of the city. PM me if you want more - I have lived since 91
