Indian restaraunts Posted: Tue January 9, 2007 07:58 AM UTC
hi,
my husband is newcastle and he is struggling with the food there. We are Indian. Can anyone help us out. plz suggest restaraunts which offer genuine indian food. Moreover he is staying in Scotswood Road. So how should he go about from his place to whatever indian restraunt u suggest. Since he will be staying there for more than a month it would be nice if u suggest some indian restaraunt that is closest.
Thanks in advance!

Years ago, we ate at a very good Indian restaurant in Newcastle but the name is long forgotten. If you get no help here, try www.chowhound.com (UK section). There are lots of helpful people there.

To be honest, many of the Indian restaurants in the UK do offer dishes which are Anglicised in one way or another (this is often the way when eating dishes from one's own country in another country!). Your husband could perhaps ask people from the local Asian community which restaurants they prefer; that would be a good way to find out, I think.

My husband hasn't found a single indian/asian in newcastle. perhaps he hasnt explored much yet. he is on a business trip so most of the day he is busy in office and in the evening he is exhausted. Moreover he said that the public transport for commutaion is also not easily accessible. He is staying on scotswood road.

This link might help (there are 176 listings with reviews): www.sugarvine.com/Newcastle/search/cuisine_search.asp?cuisine_type=Indian
This link has 63 listings, with streetmaps:
www.192.com/directory.cfm/NEWCASTLE_UPON_TYNE/INDIAN_RESTAURANT
I can't help with specifics, I'm afraid. If your husband does not have easy web access I suggest he gets a local streetmap (at a newsagents shop, perhaps) and asks to borrow the 'Yellow Pages' phone directory where he is staying, or at work. He can look up Indian restaurants and then work out where they are on the map. Asking the local people he is working/staying with will help too; most will have some idea of where the nearest restaurants are (this does not gurantee their authenticity, as I noted above).

Two of the best Indian restaurants are probably Sachins on Forth Banks behind the Centre for Life or Vujons on Queen Street off Dean Street and near the Quayside. Both are quite expensive though and in the City Centre.
He should try the Brighton Grove area of Fenham (not too far from Scotswood Road) as this area has some good Indian restaurants and a good shops if you want to do your own cooking.

You need to make for the local community ie Stanhope street/brighton grove, also seek out the local mosque which is only 1/2 mile from Scotswood road. the locals will welcome you and guide you in the right direction, also are you staying at the Jury,s Inn if so there is a god resturant about 500 yards away on Clayton Street.
