I've read recommendations to do the early morning cruise so as to avoid the tourist crowd that do the noon cruise. It seems that the afternoon cruise (3pm) is not a popular cruise - why is that so?

Also, is it necc to take the option of the underwater observatory on the cruise?

Just returned from NZ, 2 weeks drive around with a hired car. Stayed in Te Anau overnight after doing the 3 pm cruise. The drive to milford sound was wow wow wow because it was raining/storming furiously, giving us the opportunity to view the awesome waterfalls from the mountains, as we headed towards the boats at MS. In some way, the drive provided a better view of the mountains and falls, as the view from the boat was hindered by mist and heavy rain. 3 pm would be the last cruise and also the cheapest, presumably most prefer to drive back to Te Anau (1 and 1/2 hrs) or beyond in better light. But no problems in summer as sunlight til 9.30 pm. Did not take the underwater observatory so cannot comment.

BTW, if you happen to pass thru Haast, please avoid the "White bait" sandwich at the big cafe. A total rip off for $ 10.50 as it is but 2 slices of white bread (not even toasted) with a thin omellete which comprises the tinest colony of white bait. Goodluck
