Don't know what you mean when you say "reasonable" - house prices in Edmonton increased by over 50% in the past year, it's tough if you are purchasing your first home. Vacancy rates in apartments are low - so that's a tough market as well. Good luck!!!

If you are renting, southside is nice, and central areas such as Whyte Ave are fun and friendly (but noisy during hockey season!). I'm not sure about home purchasing, though. But the West End isn't the best unless you go WAY out, same with far south towards Beaumont and you don't mind driving. I prefer the Whyte Ave area. Downtown is quiet but getting kinda seedy. The University area is, of course, very nice for accessibility and quality. Good luck!

Depend on if you are buying or renting. Access to work/activities with or without a car should be considered. The closer to central you choose to live, the easier to get around by transit. If you are renting, by all means look in the downtown area west of 109 st along Jasper Avenue and north or south a couple of blocks. Easy access to all points of the city from there by transit, shopping within walking distance, nightlife, recreational river valley activities...and you won't need a car for any of them.
If you are buying, there is a good choice of newer condos, older homes which might suit your needs, and some infill homes which aren't beyond reach for those with two incomes. Enjoy the search!

If you're looking to rent an apartment, don't rent on Whyte ave. Living downtown in the summer is pretty amazing. If anyone says it's seedy, they haven't been to Whyte ave for a while.
There are two areas to look at really... there's Oliver, which is North of Jasper between 124st and 109st. That's really nice. There are a bunch of older apartments on the hills just east of the ledge grounds, and they rent pretty cheap, you can still get a 1 bedroom for 550. If you're looking for reasonable, this is it, everything else is totally unreasonable. I just moved, it was stressful. Good luck!

the housing market in alberta is THROUGH THE ROOF...so i hope that you can find something reasonable. If you plan to live in the city the the west side is really nice near the riverbend area. If you are not looking directly in edmonton, sherwood park is just east of the city by 10-15 minutes and is a nicely developed, but safe city. Good luck with the move!

There is literally NOTHING reasonable in edmonton right now. 1 bedroom apartments are going for about $1000/month (just rent, you usually have to pay just electricity on top of that though which helps). I would recommend you stay out of the west end, as it's currently REALLY expensive, although quiet (as long as you stay away from stony plain road). I currently spend $1700 for rent in the west end (and another $600 on top of that for utilities, not including phone/cable/etc) but I LOVE the west end and couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
Downtown is really creepy at night and sometimes during the day as well. A lot of drug addicts and people drunk and strung out all hours of the day and night. South side would probably be your best bet. Or look in the Clareview area, the townhouses down there are affordable (more or less).
