Hampshire is a great place to live if you are a retired stockbroker, frankly.

Hi Natalie, welcome to VT.
Like most counties it's very diverse. My favourite place is the New Forest, but that's open country and small villages, plus a couple of towns and country pubs, which I like. Cities such as Southampton and Portsmouth would give you more nightlife, Bournemouth too but that's the retirement capital of the UK. They're all about as far south as you can get, on the coast. Check the pages here on VT to get some info on all the places, then come back with more questions if you have them.

Winchester was recently awarded "best place to live in the UK" by a channel 4 property programme.
Southampton and Portsmouth aren't particularly inspiring if you're after something other than chain shops and chain bars, both have quite rough areas. However I should add both cities are improving, new shopping and housing developments springing up all the time. There's some nice villages dotted around which could be worth a look. As for Stock Broker belt, well it's generally cheaper than Surrey but will obviously cost you a fair bit more than the North East I'm afraid.
