I have heard from my colleague that tourist cannt visit jiuzhaigou WITHOUT a tour guide. Is this true?

Confucius is correct. I did it in Nov 2006 without travel mates without guide. You can ask for a 2 days pass when you purchase the entrance ticket

I was in jiuzhaigou late May 2006, very crowded. This was weeks after the May holiday. Many people following the flags of their guides. But you do not need a guide.
The paths/trails are sometime elbow to elbow. You can sometime get away for the crowds by taking a side trail.

If you intend to visit this place, there is the town itself and the natural park too which is the main feature of Jiuzhaigou. Have a look at my travel pages on this place.. I did it my way ..:-)
