Darwin Need advice : car rental, accommodation & attractions
Posted: Sun January 7, 2007 07:51 AM UTC
Hi! Am planning a 10-day trip to Darwin with a family of 8 (from 2 yrs to 62 yrs old!) in late May. Have a few questions to ask:

1) The flight I intended to book will land in Darwin at 2.30am. Is it possible to get a rented car at that timing? Any car rental company to recommend?

2) Would like to book an apartment with cooking facilities as my mum is a vegetarian. Any recommendations?

3) Saw a few advices on Darwin's attractions :) Besides Darwin, any nearby places (like Kakadu or Katherine?) to visit? Preferably family friendly places.

Appreciate your advice!

Sharon

10 days in Darwin provides you with ample opportunity to visit the various attractions within the city and its surrounds but importantly to do longer trip to kakadu and the litchfield national park. With the number of people you plan on taking it would seem more practical to get from the airport at 2.30Am to your accommodation by airport shuttle/ taxi and arrange to pick up a suitable vehicle at your leisure the next day. I would arrange for a van suitable for the number of passengers before you leave for Darwin along with your accommodation. You will need this for the long day trips to some of the scenic national parks in the area. There are excellent organised day trips by bus etc to all the various attractions but expensive with so many people. Difficult to make recommendations on accommodation or car companies, but Northern Territory Tourism will send you brochures upon request. check web sites etc.Kakadu deserves more than a day trip but it is very doable from Darwin (long day) and accommodation is not cheap. If you are going to visit Katherine and see the gorges on the boat trip, then an overnight stay may be required away from Darwin (say Katherine) to do it justice.Darwin has many varied attractions to suit the whole family. May is just after the back end of the wet season in Kakadu and the north, and is a suitable time to visit. Keep up the planning and research. Best wishes for a good holiday
