Canyon de Chelly National Monument Rim overlook drives
Posted: Sat January 6, 2007 07:57 PM UTC
I'll be visiting the park this upcoming March and I want to do both the north and south rim drives. On my map of Arizona it looks like highway 7 runs along the south rim to Chinle and then highway 64 runs along the north rim from Chinle to Tsaile. Are these the rim overlook drives or do you first have to enter the park at chinle to to access the drives?

These Navajo highways are indeed the rim drives, and you have to enter the park to drive on them. There is no fee to do, or to drive on any of the paved parts of the NM, so there is no problem to do so.

Neither is an "overlook" drive of sorts. They both run close to the rims and there are various turn-offs for vista points. It's quite nice.
