Need cheap hotel in heart of Manhatten
Posted: Sun July 27, 2003 08:25 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm coming to NYC with a friend at the end of September. We are looking for a twin room in Manhatten for under $100. I found the Newton which was very cheap ($60 per night) but seemed quite far North, on 95th and Broadway. Is this walking distance for the main parts of Manhatten (eg. Times Square). If not, what sort of area would be better? Also, is Times Square actually the place to think of when looking for somewhere in the heart of Manhatten? This is my first time to NYC and I want somewhere central to all the touristy stuff!

I live in NYC ... and 95th and Broadway is 40 blocks from Times Square - not spitting distance. More like a 25 minutes brisk walk. It's very fast by train - 10 minutes. 95th is the Upper West Side ... very residential for Manhattan and closer to Harlem than Midtown. That said, I hate midtown - so 95th isn't a bad choice ...

I am a Lower Manhattanite ... and I prefer the Chelsea (20's) and the Village (below 14th street) ... I have a few tips on my pages you might want to see ...

Remember, you can take the subway when you have long distances to travel and you can walk the rest of the time ... I would not stay in Midtown unless you must - everything is more expensive.

Happy travels ... Doc

Hello!

I'd recommend the Chelsea Star Hotel on 30th street and 8th Ave. The double rooms are approximately 80$ a night. If you're interested their toll free number is (877) 827-6969 and I'm sure you can googled it up ;-)

Happy travels!
Vanessa

A couple of years ago I lived at 95th and Broadway (don't remember a Newton Hotel, but I wasn't looking for hotels then). Location is fine (and safe enough).

What you need to decide is whether you want to pay less (even the difference between $60 and others at $80-100 is quite a bit) or be right next to everything. There is a subway stop right at 95th and Broadway that takes you to Times Square in roughly 10 minutes, so even though walking is a bit of a hike you can get there quickly.

I would only really try to stay closer to midtown/greenwich village if I was the type to go back and forth to my hotel several times a day.

Have fun.

Thanks for all the replies. How late do the subways run? If we were out till say 2am could we still get back to 95th & Broadway (or anywhere else that isn't right in the centre)? Or is like London, where if you're out later than about 12:30 it's nightbus time?

Subways open all night (the city that never sleeps), though a bit less frequent. To be more precise, some subways are open all night. The 1/9 which is 95/Bway to TimesSquare and beyond is one that stays running. Also cabs are not so expensive if you want to get home a bit quicker in the middle of the night. If you already save $20+ each night for hotel, then $10-15 (as I remember) for a cab from the village isn't so bad.

Subways run all night ... cabs are everywhere all night ... It really doesn't matter where you sleep ...that is if you do sleep ...

Most of the trains in NYC run 24 hours, but there are limited service lines.

I would do a search on New York mta on yahoo, and look up the line(s) where your hotel will be.
