| Christchurch | Lurking for Info Posted: Tue January 2, 2007 05:57 PM UTC
Thanks for the posts, we are going to NZ in late March and I will plan for every type of weather - different question: when there, I'd like to shop at a used or rummage or thrift shop or somewhere the locals donate their items: what do the NZers call it?
Thanks for your help. |

They call them Op shops, but I know I didn't find many in NZ!
I can think of one in Christchurch, but that was more what we call in the UK a 'retro shop' stuff from the 1960's-80's really, so these people know what they're selling, it was in the centre, but I don't think that's what you're looking for (?). I found two good ones in Queenstown, I think they were Salvation Army ones. Good luck!! I didn't find many in AU either, not like the UK where every town centre has at least 5.

Oh yes, they are rather elusive! Well they were to me.
I tended to find them more out of the city centres when on a 'wander'. Dunedin had a couple, being a university town, Wanaka no, Queenstown two, up the West coast none, can't remember if Nelson did..... I seemed to see a lot more garage sales than op shops really.

Daughter refused to take thermals - so don't expect them to be in opshops - they are the sort of thing we use until they are rags. But bf left his loaned polar fleece in his car at home - so he's hoping....!! Daughter loves to opshop and she's got a nose for it - see what she comes up with. She's been trained by an expert shopper.

Haha, shame about the fleece! There's always The Warehouse :-)
I love to go to them (charity shops, car boots sales, as we call them) don't see the point in paying the full price for things. I got a lovely Burberry duffel coat for £10, think that's about AU$25 and new they're about £200 (AU$495 ish) only a fool would pay that much. Good luck with both your hunts. Emma.

Hope your coat isn't a clever fake! We get some great things at opshops here too - daughter is a drama student, so "costume" potential is also an appeal. As always, its the thrill of the chase!

Kia ora
If you come to Kerikeri do patronise our local SPCA shop. If my hens are laying well ( they tend to holiday in winter) and the dogs don't find the nests before I do, you'll be able to buy beautiful free range eggs. ;-)

Hi
I live in Christchurch and can't think of any in the city. They are in the suburbs, Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul) are in a couple of suburbs. There is a very big cheap charity shop on Cranford Steet. Another very big cheap second hand shop out at Brighton Beach. I like to support charity shops too, but have to admit the clothes tend to be quite old in a lot of them.
