Fiaker in Vienna
Posted: Sun July 27, 2003 06:09 PM UTC
Hi! My name is Amanda, and have recently spent 6 months in Vienna, as part of my modern language degree in Manchester. As part of my course I am required to complete a project on a subject area of my choice. I have chosen to compose a project about the Fiaker in Vienna. I would be really grateful, If anyone could post me their own views and comments about the Fiaker. Do you think the Fiaker are an important part of Viennese society or just a tourist trap, and a waste of money???! Thanx u!

hi amanda! interesting topic :-) i would say the fiakers are neither an important part of viennese society nor just a tourist trap. i'm living in vienna an i never did a trip with one. i think you can compare them with gondolas in venice, they are part of the city. sometimes they are annoying and stinking, but sometimes they are nice to watch and maybe someday i will even take a trip with one.

Hi! The fiaker is now only an expensive way for tourists to see the first district of Vienna. I have lived here many years but never tried one out due to the price. Previously this would have been the only form of public transport like in many cities and today the fiaker drivers only dress up a part like the mozart concert ticket seller. Its more a case today that visitors think they are doing something traditional but are actually the only ones doing it and therefore perpetuating the tradition!! However, locals still hire white fiakers for weddings or special occasions. Nowadays there are also women fiaker drivers which there never were before. My favourite part about fiakers is driving home on the bus and looking out the window to see a driver going home with his horses or early in the morning to see them on their way to work!!

My boyfriend works in one of the streets where Fiakers make their way through the city. There are always traffic jams, dirt and noisy cleaning mashines there. I do not really like horses or anything, but imagine there will be no Fiakers in Stephansplatz one day! Will it look the same?
I never took a ride on one either, but my boyfriend did. He said that he had a feeling of being in another century and being rich. I have nothing against Fiakers and I like to watch them from that bus in the center too.
