Teatro Di Marcello

Hi folks,

just back from a fabulous trip to Rome. Had a fun time.... but that is nothing unusual really :-)

Anyway, noticed that at the top of the Teatro Di Marcello are what appeared to be modern style windows and even flats or apartments. How can that be in such a historical environment amongst ruins??? I mean you don't see anyone renting out accomodation in the likes of the Colliseum!

Can anyone shed some light on this? I am really intrigued!

Thanks a million

Whats wrong with that? In fact the Colisseum was rented out for housing and shops up until the 12C, until the Fragipane family bought it. They lived there for awhile. Then from the 14-19C's it was inhabited by a religous order.

But anyways, the apartments on top of the theater are not new. They were built there in 1519 by the Savelli family and redone in 1712 when the Orsini's bought the place. Henceforth, making the apartments on top an historic and unmovable item. A part of history.

This is in the best Roman tradition. When the Romans built things, they frequently altered plans and rebuilf for many years afterwards. There is no shortage of buildings in Rome that begain life 2000 years ago and have evolved as time passed. Just look at the walls down by the sidewalk and see that old brickwork. Look at the Pantheon - now a Christian church greatly remodelled (on the inside) from its original pagan decor. Rome might look like a museum to outsiders, but it just ain't so.

Excatly!!! In fact, if you were to go into the basements of alot of the buildings in Rome, you will find ancient Roman ruins. I once had the oppurtunity to take a private walk into a closed to the public basement of a church. Underneath I was able to explore 2C Roman houses and in addition was able to go under neath one of them into an ancient crypt. It was amazing. if you only knew what was beneath your feet as you walk through this amazing city, you would be amazed!!! One of the reasons why we only have two subway lines here.

Wow, thanks for all that interesting info!

As to knowing what's underneath your feet: I also went to the PROFONDO ROSSO shop (run by directors Dario Argento and Luigi Cozzi). The shop itself was pretty small, but when you went to "Dario Argento's Museum of Horrors" underneath you were amazed how thick and solid the cellars were. Like dungeons...
