I'm sure you already looked at VT's Beijing travel guide so I'll just list the highlights for you in one simple concise reply:
1. The Mao Mausoleum
2. The Ming Tombs
3. The Jade Factory
4. Beijing Zoo
5. Beijing World Park
6. Grand View Garden

Lol Confuscius...
Worldboy, do have a look at pages like Confucius, Sugarpuff (our initial info provider for much of our travel in Beijing)other regulars in this forum.
Also, read up on weather factors in most of the guide books or, googling the info on your web browser.
China was highly enjoyable, Great Wall, Tianemen Square, Forbidden City, Confucious Temple and other's are must do's.

Confucius Temple is most important in Beijing! Posted: Sat December 30, 2006 06:13 PM UTC
Oh right, silly me; how could I forget my own temple? Yes, by all means visit the Temple of Yours Truly in Beijing. It's located left of the Lama Temple at Yonghegong subway stop.

Been there twice. I would follow advice of Ellyse who answered your question. My list would stress Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, Temple of the Sun, Lama Temple and the Great Wall. If you like markets and will be there on a Saturdy, the Panjiayuan Dirt Market, provided you get thre very early.

Correction in my reply. I meant the Temple of Heaven, not the Temple of the Sun
