There are several organized tours going to different sections of the Great Wall. We chose Mutianyu as it is less crowded than Badaling and, we hired a driver (contact on our pages).
You might want to do research as to weather factors at that time of year in the different sections of the wall or, wether one is kept more maintained as opposed to others.
Here's a handy link to different sections of the wall:

We too chose MuTianYu section (same reasons).

We bought a tour to the Great Wall at our hostel - 180RMB ($22.5) per person. Includes transfer and entrance tickets (not the cable car). The ride from the hostel to the wall was about 2 hours, then we had 4 hours to ourselves on the wall and then 2.5 hours to get back to Beijing.

To go up/down the wall you can take the cable car - for a single trip at 35RMB or a round trip at 56RMB ($7). You can also go down on toboggan (it`s included in the round trip ticket).

Anyone can contact our hostel and book a Wall tour with them, we had a couple other guys/gals joining us along the way.

As you will visit in Jan and may either try badaling or mutianyu.
Cold in Beijing then and might feel warmer with more tourists.
Spend a whole day in the Fobidden City.
