How much do we tip everyone? who all expects a tip? In Peso's or dollars? I'm assumming a couple dollars daily for the maid, is that right? (that's what we do here in Minnesota,) but we don't normally tip bag boys and such here, so I'm not sure what the correct ammount would be...

we were there in 2002. They didnt seem to care if it was pesos or dollars...dollars are like a second currency in mexico. At that time it was about 10 pesos to the dollar. We got our dollars exchanged for pesos at our resort and they didnt change a fee.

We tipped like we were in the USA. Maids, waiters..etc. We didnt tip in stores and markets...and I saw no one else tipping either. So again tip as you would here and in the same amounts.

Yes, Mexico is in many ways, a similar place as the Us for tipping.. but, i think it's more obvious in certain places about the tipping. I found some places it's more than others..

Sometimes I even have experienced when tipping people, there was a point that it was too much, like almost every single people expected a tip for an unsolicited service, there are some of course I know, parking and a guy approaching, we call them viene viene, or a bag boy in the store, but one day it was simply too much and i felt really upset.

We rented a car, the guy who drove us to the car rental expected a tip (1), that's okay, he carried some of our luggage.
The guy who showed how the car worked and reporting previous damage, also expected a tip, we gave him in usd and he got upset because he expected more. (2).

A person in a parking, they even asked if we were going to take long time when having a meal somewhere, so if we could pay in advance (3).. of course by the time we came back, the person was gone.

I could keep going with the list, there was a point where tipping is just fine, but there were people who just were wrong.

In restaurants we usually tip the 15% as in the US.. same with maids and bell boys, depending on the service.

There are areas where people is really kind and they don't expect anything in return and that is most appreciated..

General tips are:

20 to 50 pesos to a bag boy depending on the distance and ammount of bags
20 pesos for a maid on a daily basis or 50 pesos at the end of your stay
10% at restaurants, 15% if you got a good service, 20% at luxury restaurants where you get an amazing service
10 to 20 pesos to a valet parking driver
10 % to a barman (we actually don't tip barmans in a general basis, you tip the waiter)
10 pesos to a toilet cleaner if there is any and if they have a place to put tips


taxi drivers are not tipped unless they help with bags, 10 to 20 pesos at much
do not tip at shops or markets, actually you bargain there
do not tip hotel maintenance guys if you get a service from them


That is it... do not tip more than that!

Buena informacion Alfredo, gracias, aunque no formule la pregunta, vi que pusiste un par que no me sabia.. aunque 20 a 50 pesos a alguien que te ayude con el mandado en el estacionamiento? Supongo que si es en el mercado y la persona te ayuda tooodo el rato.. pues.. ya es diferente.
