We were planning a trip to the area around Phoenix and would like to know when the best time to see the cactus in bloom would be. We understand it is beautiful and one of the must see things we want to do.

Cacti bloom at different times throughout the spring and summer dependent upon the species (e.g. - barrels, chollas), but you're probably referring to the saguaro cactus, which is supposed to bloom from late May to June. However, cacti are very particular and will often hold off until the rains come, so there's really no telling. I think they bloomed in July this year, but I have pictures from late May 2005 of them blooming near Globe.

We have one cactus in our front yard and it blooms in May and at night time or early morning. Once the sun is out, the flower closes. I have three pictures on my page and one of them is a picture of cacutus flower. I don't know what kind of cactus it is but the flower is definately beautiful.
